This website is a cooperative effort by the members of the Japan English-Language birders Facebook group, Kantori. It is an accumulation and collocation of information from our membership group postings and other sources on the Japanese avifauna of interest to the membership. Although the website language is English, we would particularly like to thank our Japanese friends and colleagues, without whose knowledge and contributions this site would be considerably more barren.

The Kantori group
In the spring of 1997, when Fer-Jan de Vries and Neil Fergusson were still living in Japan, they started the mailing list Kantori on Egroups, later Yahoo groups, for active birdwatchers interested in birds in Japan. Now 25 years later, they are no longer in Japan, but the group is still going strong on Facebook. The usual language of conversation is English and the discussion is mildly moderated. Please join us!
Topics of discussion should be limited to:
a. Principal topic: birds of Japan and birding in Japan
i. Birdwatching: identification tips, good birding places, results of field trips, information about new field trips, etc.
ii. Bird ecology: when, where and why do which birds occur, habitat preferences, changing habits, etc.
iii. Bird conservation: local and regional problems and solutions
b. Other minor topics which may be of interest to members: Japan's plants, mammals, reptiles, and other natural history
